Definition of GERD
GERD is Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease and describes a condition, where gastric content refluxes into the gullet and causes symptoms (heartburn, acid regurgitation, coughing) which impair life quality.
Reflux of gastric juice into the gullet causes inflammation and impairment of the transport function of the esophagus (difficulties at swallowing).
You know that you have GERD, if you have GERD symptoms. GERD symptoms include heartburn, regurgitation, difficulties at swallowing, coughing, wheezing, burning sensations within your throat, ears & tongue.
Symptom Checklist
If you have GERD symptoms you are recommended to see your physician & talk to your physician.
Your physician wants to know (=GERD check list, see above):
- type and duration of GERD symptoms,
- prior use of antacids and /or proton pump inhibitors (PPI),
- if GERD improved after medical treatment,
- when GERD symptoms do occur (after the meal, during night?),
- which GERD symptom(s) do impair your quality of life,
- your family history (GERD in relatives).
Indicate if you had prior operations (appendectomy, gall bladder, tonsillectomy etc.), presence of comorbidities (hypertension, migraine, cardio-pulmonary disorders) and allergies.
Indicate if you have glaucoma (PPI treatment may aggravate the glaucoma).
