Novel GERD Treatment Concept

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

Novel GERD Treatment

The novel treatment aims to eliminate the reflux and the cancer risk.

The acidic part of the reflux is eliminated by proton pump inhibitor therapy (PPIs).

The entire reflux is eliminated by an effective anti reflux surgery, i.e. fundoplication.

The cancer risk in those with Barrett's esophagus is eliminated by radiofrequency ablation (RFA, HALO®, Barrx Medical) of Barrett's tissue.

Figure 4: Novel GERD treatment. Barrett's esophagus is eliminated by radiofrequency ablation (RFA). Thereafter the patients are kept on high dose PPIs, finally fundoplication for the effective elimination of all reflux should be considered. Those with GERD without Barrett's are kept on PPIs. Fundoplication should be considered if GERD is not fully PPI sensitive and patients do not want to take life long PPIs.
